Trump Pressured Mexican President Nieto Not To Oppose Paying For Wall
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, may have spoken about some interesting topics during his campaign. However, the biggest topic spoken of most certainly was his wall idea. It did not make sense then, and still doesn’t now. The best part of this to some was that Trump claimed he would get Mexico to pay for the wall. Yet two Mexican Presidents, including the current in Enrique Pena Nieto, have claimed this is not happening.
Why would Mexico be against such a wall existing? Perhaps, it’s due to the fact that the Mexican economy is actually doing pretty well right now. We have less Mexicans entering the United States for work than ever before, and Mexico is now a nation improving rather than declining. The people there have found a reason to stay, which is why the wall was not going to make sense.
Why try to keep people out who aren’t interested in going in the first place? On top of this, around 70% of all illegal immigrants came in legally. They simply overstayed their welcome time, and that led to the biggest issue. President Nieto also knows that Mexico has no reason to pay for the wall, and the people of the U.S. probably shouldn’t want them to either. Why is that?
Mexico Cannot Be Held Back Trade-Wise
Trump mentioned that Mexico would pay for the wall due to the fact that they owe America economically. This is actually incorrect, as it’s the businesses in Mexico that have deals in the United States, not the country. This is when Trump had to switch courses, as he realized he could not force them to do this because law-wise, the country isn’t the one owing money.
This was when the idea of boosting tariffs came into play. Some theorize that Trump can simply raise them, forcing Mexico to have a tougher time trading with American companies. What does this have to do with Americans? That means, any supplies made in Mexico will have to go up in price due to tariffs increasing.
President Nieto knows this, which is why he knows America would not benefit in trade this way. American companies trade with places in Mexico due to the price being so good. Plus Mexican companies sell a lot of things in America due to the price being so good as well. They would only raise prices, forcing people to pay more for things they may buy. An increase here hurts overall.
If a company trades with Mexico, they would have to increase the price of their material here. That forces them to then possibly lose business, all over a wall that is not as needed as Trump seems to think. Companies do not do well from this, and neither do the American people.
Trump Pressuring Nieto
If you can believe it, U.S. President Trump seems to be angry with Mexican President Nieto. The Washington Post claims that Trump pressuring Nieto earlier this year to stop publicly saying Mexico would not pay for the border wall between the two nations.
Trump would tell the Mexican President that they both were in a bit of a bind over his campaign pledge to help stop illegal immigration. This of course involved Mexico paying for the wall as well from Trump. This is according to a transcript that came after Trump took office earlier this year.
Trump would say:
“They are going to say, ‘who is going to pay for the wall, Mr. President?’ to both of us, and we should both say, ‘we will work it out. It will work out in the formula somehow. As opposed to you saying, ‘we will not pay’ and me saying, ‘we will not pay.”
Neito would retort, saying:
“my position has been and will continue to be very firm, saying that Mexico cannot pay for the wall.”
He did agree with Trump that he would stop talking about the wall. However, if the Mexican President is asked his thoughts…one can assume he will keep his original position.
Trump Lies About Phone Conversation with Nieto?
President Nieto has stood his ground on the fact Mexico won’t pay for the wall, and does not seem to be planning to back off. Well, that’s unless you talk to Trump. The President recently spoke about a phone call he had with Nieto where he said he received “the ultimate compliment” from the Mexican President. This is, of course, not the same call from earlier in the year he is referring to.
In an interview while introducing new White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Trump spoke about the wall, saying:
“The border was a tremendous problem and they’re close to 80 percent stoppage, and even the President of Mexico called me. They said [on] their southern border, very few people are coming because they know they’re not going to get through.”
However, President Nieto said that this phone call never happened.
Nieto Setting The Record Straight?
While President Trump may like saying things that sound good, it seems that he makes stuff up in his own mind. Shortly after this came out, President Nieto released a statement saying that he has not “recently communicated” with Trump by phone.
In fact, he said the last time he spoke with Trump about the wall was at the G-20 Summit in July. However, Nieto never said that he even said this during his conversation with Trump. The two were supposed to meet in Washington, D.C. earlier this year, but Nieto cancelled after Trump said “Mexico will foot the bill,” regarding the border wall.
As of now, it seems Mexico and the United States are far away from making the wall happen. As of now, tax-payers will pay for the wall if it does happen. Mexico won’t pay the country back for it either, and would only be able to get them to do with trade issues. In reality, it would be a problem trying this as mentioned earlier.
